Pet Bluefin / Black Damselfish For Sale

In the aquarium, this saltwater fish species can grow to a maximum size of 16 cm (6.3 in). As a juvenile, The pet Bluefin Damsel or Black Damselfish is very attractive, with a gray body highlighted by bright yellow dorsally and blue pectoral fins. As pet Bluefin Damselfish matures, it becomes uniformly black.

Scientific Name: Neoglyphidodon melas, formerly Paraglyphidodon melas

Common Name: Bluefin Damselfish, Black Damselfish, Bowtie Damselfish, Zulu Damsel, Yellow-back Damsel, Bluefin Damsel, and Royal Damsel.

Family: Pomacentridae

Genus: Neoglyphidodon

Size: 0.5-2.0 inches and matures to 7 inches in length

Origin: Bluefin Damsels are commonly found throughout the Indo-Pacific in coral reefs and lagoons. In the Indian Ocean, Black Damselfish are found around the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, eastern Africa, Madagascar, Seychelles, the Arabian Sea, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, the Andaman Sea, Indonesia, and western Australia. In the Pacific Ocean, Black Damsels are found in areas around Indonesia, Australia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan, Papua New Guinea, Palau, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands. 

Habitat: In their natural habitat, juvenile Bluefin / Black Damselfish are encountered around Acropora corals. Adult Black Damsels are found around clams of the genus Tridacna and sometimes feed on their waste.

Diet: The pet Bluefin (Black) Damsel is an omnivorous species of damselfish which feeds on a variety of things like flake and frozen foods such as brine shrimp. Younger juveniles feed solely on plankton. Older juveniles of this species add soft corals to their diet. Young adult pet Black Damsels feed on Tridacna clam feces, and the older and bigger they are, they eat more clam feces. 

Temperament: Aggressive. In the aquarium, the juvenile Black Damselfish is generally peaceful but becomes quite aggressive as it matures. Black Damsels should only be kept with other large aggressive species. Only one Black Damselfish should be kept per aquarium, unless it is very large. It may be a threat to shrimp, and may nip at soft corals. Adult pet Bluefin Damsels are territorial to each other and defend their territories. The larger the pet Bluefin Damselfish, the more aggressive it gets and they are also known to attack larger saltwater fish than themselves.

Captive Requirement: The Bluefin / Black Damsel requires an aquarium size of 55 gallons. 

Reproduction: Adult Pet Black Damselfish pair up when they are breeding. The eggs of the pet Bluefin Damsel are laid in the substrate. Once the eggs are laid, the male Black Damsel guards and aerates the eggs until they hatch.

Water Requirements: 72-78° F, dKH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, sg 1.020-1.025

Life Span: In captivity pet Black Damsels are known to live 2-3 years.
