Product Description

Pet Indian Vagabond Butterflyfish For Sale

The Indian ((Black) Vagabond Butterflyfish, Chaetodon decussatus, is a species of Butterflyfish (family Chaetodontidae) that is believed to be the easiest of the Butterflyfish to keep. The monogamous adults swim in pairs and may be territorial and aggressive to other Chaetodon; juveniles are solitary. The Black (Indian) Vagabond Butterflyfish feeds largely on algae and coral polyps and are oviparous.

Scientific Name: Chaetodon decussatus

Common Name: Black Vagabond Butterflyfish, Indian Vagabond Butterflyfish, Blackened Butterflyfish, Black-finned Vagabond

Family: Chaetodontidae

Class: Actinopterygii

Order: Perciformes

Sub Genus: Rabdophorus

Size: medium - 1.5-3.5 inches and matures to 8 inches in length.

Origin: The Black Vagabond Butterflyfish originates in the Indo-West Pacific, from the Maldives via India, Sri Lanka and the Andaman Sea to the westernmost portion of the Indonesian archipelago.

Habitat: The Black (Indian) Vagabond Butterflyfish inhabits rocky, rubble or coral-rich areas, and is particularly common in turbid water, and is a benthic feeder, occasionally feeding from live corals.

Diet: Feed the Black Vagabond Butterflyfish herbivore foods, dried seaweed, or live macro algae. Freeze dried algae sheets should be offered daily. These Butterflyfish accept dried and frozen foods, and several feedings per day are suggested. An ample supply of live rock to allow for grazing is almost mandatory for this genus. Black Vagabond Butterflyfish struggle in tanks without a mature live rock and sand bed, but are extremely sturdy in mature aquarium environments with live rock.

Temperament: Semi-Aggressive

Difficulty Rating: Moderate

Captive Requirements:  These pet saltwater fish should be kept in a well run aquarium where they can "graze" algae from rocks and stones. If there are insufficient algae on the rocks, it is important to feed more frequently and supplement with algae rich pet fish food e.g. Spirulina. More than one individual can be housed in the same tank, as long as the aquarium is 180 gallons or more, and the two fish are introduced simultaneously.

Water Requirements: 72-78° F, dKH 8-12, pH 8.1-8.4, sg 1.020-1.025
