Malawi Auratus are a fabulous fish with bright colors and a bold pattern. In aquariums, Auratus can grow to be about 5" long, including their tails. Rarely would an Auratus grows longer than 5". Auratus are usually very aggressive fish and, from time to time, males have long energetic battles. Recommended tank mates for Auratus include, other aggressive Mbuna species and Synodontis Catfish. Mbunas live best at 78 degrees with Alkaline water. These fish can adapt, however, to most types of water, and so as usual it's best not to try to change the pH or alkalinity. Mbunas eventually need to live in an aquarium with at least 80-gallons of water. Each Mbuna will need at least 5-gallons of water, and they live best in an aquarium with at least 15 other Mbunas of about the same size. Mbunas do not need gravel, and a layer of gravel more than 1/4" thick will usually fill with bits of uneaten food that will contaminate the water. Mbunas love rocks and rocky caves - they tend to dig up live plants.
